I do believe it's a Metropolitan county of Greater London. Like you PL I have no idea where it's borders are.
Surrey is similar in places, the rural boundary is fine, it's the London boundary I don't understand.

GreP - how long has East Sussex existed then - all my life, I'm sure - although the East/West boundary has moved.
I believe in Middx, I think it was a useful grouping.
