Cheeky’s Dad
Newbie question - I have done very little fell running (1 short race) but I loved it and I live just on the edge of the Berwyns in North Wales so prime off road country. I’ve only ever had road shoes and, partly because of this, most of my running is on road. I’m thinking of getting some shoes with a bit more grip to encourage me off road a bit more and give a bit more confidence. Probably I’d be on mostly hard packed trails & stony tracks though occasionally grass/mud though inevitably there would also be a good proportion of tarmac thrown in.

Any ideas of shoes that would be worth looking at to give better grip but still have durability? I’m a bit limited for shops locally to try loads of pairs on so it would be great to have some ideas so I can target my search a bit. I currently wear Brooks Adrenaline GTS for the road and have quite wide feet.

The Inov8 range is pretty comprehensive at the moment, with a lot of the models coming in 2 width variants.
If you think in terms of lug depth and how much grip you think you'll need :-

2mm - Roadfly
4mm - Trailfly, Trailfly Speed (stripped down, less cushion, more racier version )
6mm - Trailtalon, Trailtalon Speed
8mm - Mudtalon, Mudtalon Speed

I like the wide fit of the inov-8 but didn’t like the amount of foam in the standard versions.

I’ve had a few Altra Lone Peak which are a wide toe box and 4mm lug

To add, that from your description of typical conditions then for most people probably Trailfly would be best. Trailtalon would be better if majority was softer ground, with some sections of hard pack, and Mudtalon are principally for fell running

Someone might say there’s been better but I think these were pretty good ;-)

I'll counter the Inov8 with some mainstream-ness. I wear Brooks Adrenaline for road and I'm a big fan of Hoka Speedgoats for trail. Grip might be similar to the 4mm Trailfly but they are similar width (if not wider) than the Adrenaline and very comfy doing a few km on the road as the start and end of a trail run

I've got Hoka speed goats as well. Good fast shoe compromise for hard packed stuff, useless on real mud/snow but I'll tend to crack out the spikes then anyway 😂

Mudtalon are (were) awful on road. I did the 3 peaks (which has a lot of hardened path) in them because they were all I had at the time and it was a pretty painful experience!

I do need to get some proper fell shoes for next summer season... We've got the shop in Bakewell so I may well go up there at some point.
