Oh JEB, that's so sad. I lost my nearly-16 year old cat a year ago. It's a long time to share with another being.

Thanks all. He's completely fine in himself, happy as ever. He started dribbling last week and he was in for his boosters so they checked it out and the found the lump. It has already grown since then and although they removed what they could the vet suspects it will be quite aggressive and will stop him eating pretty soon. He's older than both my girls, they've never known the house without him, I think that's what I'm finding hardest.

Our cats were 15 months old when I had my daughter, so their demise was very hard for her (and for us as they were the first cats we'd had as adults and as a couple). Your girls will be OK - understandably distressed and upset at first but I think in some ways it's a life lesson.
