Lovely post _andy, it's so nice to bump in to people isn't it. I ran just over 5 miles with eldest son Lachlan and WKP. We bumped in to an local running friend who was out walking with his son.
So I'm up to Ptarmigan Lodge, leaving me 7.64 miles to complete leg 1 tomorrow. I'm planning my usual 3 miles in the morning and a run with josieT in the evening.
Well done mrs_s - no need to rush this: it's a virtual ultramarathon, not a marathon (!)
And FR - compared to the Lakeland 100, you'd be fine for the whw race, really. Much more achievable to complete.
My 39 mile photo (Dario's post) from this morning:
Loch Leven instead of Loch Lomond, but the grey and green colours with mist-covered hills, the birch, heather & blaeberry, plus loads of steps up and down, made for a good virtual/actual match. No goats, but I startled a deer about 30 feet away just after the photo and it bolted off the trail and into the trees.
Great photo, at first glance I thought you were actually at the real Dario's post!
And I thought Lakeland 50 was harder than whw race. I wouldn't even contemplate Lakeland 100. I'm thinking of doing the virtual race, probably stick to the 50 😀
Hah - saw the orange theme on FB! You need to get the rest of the family in future photos too! Red again for me today (Fling t-shirt though). But my family have been complaining that I'm wearing the whw 2014 hoodie now. It's the yellow one. More yellow than any other yellow thing you've ever seen.
A hot 'n' sticky 20 added this morning - mostly trails and included an 'unintended diversion' when I turned left at a wall across the fell thinking I'd hit it where I planned rather than somewhat lower down and had to retrace my steps . Fetch/Garmin route mapping suggests nearly 700m of ascent too but I'm not sure I believe that. That takes me to just over 40 miles which, to those of you who know the route, looks like Beinglas Farm.
So - leg 1 done - a day ahead of the deadline as planned/hoped. Time for a rest then push on again tomorrow.
Enjoying this - keep the stories/progress updates coming please
Fab running CumbriAndy, you're way ahead of target!
Richard has just posted this link in our what's app group, it's a video our friend Chris made when he crewed for me in 2015. Very evocative of the race and it's not just me, you'll recognise some others. Worth playing with sound up :
Following the cancellation of the 2020 Altra West Highland Way Race, we have decided to organise a virtual West Highland Way Race instead. The virtual events start at midnight on Thursday 11 June and allows people to run or walk 95 miles over 9.5 days, either individually, as a semi competitive 3 person relay team, or as a multi person fun relay team.
All entrants need to follow government guidelines for the period of the virtual race. Like all virtual events it relies on honesty from everyone, just getting out there, logging some miles as accurately as possible, and having some fun too.
Unlike the traditional event we are actively discouraging anyone from covering the 95 miles in one go. Instead you can run segments of your choosing, reaching the 3 checkpoint cutoffs, and then uploading your details to an online platform run by SI Entries.
Checkpoints are at:
Inversnaid - Leg 1: 36 miles to be completed by midnight on Monday 15 June;
Victoria Bridge, by Loch Tulla - Leg 2: a further 27 miles to be completed by midnight on Thursday 18 June;
Fort William - Leg 3: a further 32 miles giving a total of 95 miles to be completed by midday on Sunday 21 June.
Each runner or team needs to decide on a strategy according to their own ambitions and available time. Run and enjoy long single stages or break it down in to smaller (and possibly faster) stages - your imagination is your only guide.
On the evening of Saturday 20 June from 7pm to 8.30pm there will also be a show hosted by John Kynaston and Ian Beattie on the race Facebook page. They will chat with previous race winners and characters from earlier West Highland Way Races, along with a quiz.
More details, including a link to the entry page on SI Entries, can be found on the race website westhighlandwayrace.org
