Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yamauchi always struck me as a decent, kind, reasonable person...until she started campaigning for womens' sport to ban trans women.

It's not that I disagree with the arguments either, the whole area is a minefield and there are no easy answers. But the way she and Sharron Davies approach the topic repels me.

In Davies' case it seems like she repels a lot of other people too, seems to have lost a lot of work recently as a result:

wiltshirelive.co.uk

Reading Yamauchi's recent tweets (and noting that she is clinging to JK Rowling for support...not so much Sharron Davies) I can't help but think this issue has somehow changed her as a person, she just seems so utterly polarised now and so far away from reasoned discussion.

What on earth is this for example:

Mara Yamauchi @mara_yamauchi 3h
Eddie Izzard says Izzard is a ‘girl’ - but the minimum age to stand to be elected as an MP is 18 - how does that work? I thought definition of a ‘girl’ was a juvenile ie not yet adult female. 🤔

It is an incredibly polarising issue isn't it. Hyperbole from all angles and irrational arguments. No answer / resolution has yet achieved mass acceptance.

And yet, as a man I do find it difficult to escape the fact that I'm viewing the issue from a very different perspective than as a woman. c.f. my poorly constructed comments a few weeks ago trying to articulate views on the "she was asking for it" type debate. For whatever reason it does feel "different" to be allowing birth-men to be in female only spaces, whereas allowing birth-women into men only spaces feels less challenging. And apologies in advance if I've managed to screw up articulating that sensitively too!

It's just because all those lazy British workers were on holiday. It'll be fine as soon as an entitlement to paid time off is abolished.

Can’t believe the lazy sods aren’t taking on multiple jobs to fill all those vacancies, particularly in hospitality.

The Economist on Truss (love the final sentence)…

Liz Truss is already a historical figure. However long she now lasts in office, she is set to be remembered as the prime minister whose grip on power was the shortest in British political history. Ms Truss entered Downing Street on September 6th. She blew up her own government with a package of unfunded tax cuts and energy-price guarantees on September 23rd. Take away the ten days of mourning after the death of the queen, and she had seven days in control. That is the shelf-life of a lettuce.

Windfall tax on the generators (wind, biomass, solar) and the Truss U Turn.

This could actually blow up in her face. There are noises of capping income to £50 - £70 MWH or even £100 - £110 softer landing expectations. This is going to slash renewables revenues and turn them into an effective fixed low margin business. (btw EU are proposing EURO180 MWH). It could cause a flight of capital out of renewable projects - basically if you get 5% Investing in Fixed Income market and government is legislating to effectively fix returns on a renewable project to, say 4% when you model it out, why bother?

Interesting thread on the financial armageddon currently playing out with BoE's very short term market intervention and suggesting things are set to get much worse very soon, and in the medium term when Labour potentially come to power:

Pension funds collapsing sounds a bit messy, but it seems an actual possibility here? Not totally understanding every bit of what's going on, so I'm taking anything that Rees-Mogg says and assuming the opposite is probably true.

Adam Bienkov @AdamBienkov 4h
"Our pension funds aren't at risk," says Jacob Rees-Mogg.
