I've read that, it's very good. A big commitment though!

I just started "Fortunata and Jacinta" a 19th century Spanish classic - it's over 800 pages and small font! (v.good so far though)

Excellent. There’s a balance between what I think we’d all enjoy and what will stick too much in the craw of the literary fiction crowd.

Can I go up to 420 pages or is 400 the cut off?

I think 420 is fine.

(Reserving the right to completely reverse on that if it turns out to be Scott Mariani's Space Cop series)

The short list is three space operas, a grimdark fantasy and a very, very unorthodox crime novel.

The grimdark is 480 though so I think we can safely ditch that.

"a very, very unorthodox crime novel" sounds my sort of thing.

Okay.

We have the one I feel I *should* pick - Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie - but I suspect many of you have already read it, even if I haven't

We have the one I'd like to pick - Revenger by Alastair Reynolds - an accessible yarn by a proper hard-SF author - but I fear the snifferati would have too much fun mocking it.

And so, we come to the extreme compromise candidate.

We accept that Elmore Leonard is A Good Thing, right? And that Carl Hiaasen is the same only with less talent but the Florida madness dialled up to 11?

So the September chozz is to Carl Hiaasen what Carl Hiaasen is to Elmore Leonard.

Florida Roadkill by Tim Dorsey.

I suspect we'll all hate it.

As usual, this can be overturned on appeal, in which case we'll go with Revenger.
