Happy New Year, all! Hit of the Christmas period for us has been Cascadia. A relatively straightforward-looking tile-laying game with bags of difficult choices to be made. (I’ll get back to the blogging next week and this will feature!)

We (2 parents and 4 young adults) have spent most of the festive season playing Qwirkle and Mexican Train Doms. Both tiles rather than board games but not too complicated to play after a glass or 2!

I had hoped to play my Dad at scrabble or backgammon (not many you can play with 2 people) but didn’t get round to it. A shame as they’re the only ones I’m any good at.

We played Qwirkle (the travel edition) solidly for a week when on a holiday about eight years ago and haven’t touched it since. But it is good fun and I’ll be digging out our copy again too.

Do I remember reading a question about Everdell a while ago? We've had it about a year. MrsTea loves it - her favourite game - and she almost always wins. It's a good game but certainly not one of my favourites (which has nothing to do with the fact that I almost always lose!) We've just played it again this afternoon - predictable result.

Qwirkle gets another vote in our house too.

Everdell might have been me. I bought a copy just before Christmas, but haven’t even opened it yet. Looks like a good family theme.

Having friends over and they brought two collaborative games. Burgle Bros :

And Forbidden Island :

I only played the first one and it took ages to set up. Also took a while to get the hang of it. We got caught.

Interesting, I've never played Burgle Bros, heard of it but never investigated the gameplay. As for Forbidden Island I have it, played it a few times but never really enjoyed it. It was reimplemented in Forbidden Desert by Matt Leacock which might have given me a better experience. Matt used his experiences with those 2 games to design Pandemic, a game that got my boys and wife involved in playing board games. I really enjoyed Pandemic but Forbidden Island never floated my boat. If you enjoyed them I would encourage you to carry on playing them and being an advocate for those games.

With co-op games just be wary of quarterbacking, an experienced player directing the actions of other players which results in the directed players not really get to make any decisions for themselves. With that in mind most co-op games work as solo games with you controlling as many players as you want. I have played Pandemic solo and have thoroughly enjoyed it. However given recent events it might just be too raw for some.

Remember it's only a game and enjoy your gaming.

I played Pandemic solo the other day - did a 4 player game! Found it a rather pleasant experience (used a spare counter as an "active player" marker) - although perhaps it was because everything fell quite nicely for "us". Going to try and make it a regular thing as it's a good break from video games, and flexes different brain cells!
