Thank you for articulating my own vague confusion over the movie generally. I'm also interested in the answers.

It's not really a kids' movie, although it's not exactly unsuitable for kids (no bad language, or sex, only very mild and non injurious violence), it would probably just go over most kids heads.

I don't think it's too spoilery to say that Margot Robbie's Barbie has to leave Barbie land, where the Barbie's run everything and things are always great, and go to the real world, which the Barbie's believe must by now mostly resemble Barbieland because of the generations of girls who grew up playing with Barbie and learning that they can be whatever they want to be. And Ken goes with her because he doesn't really exist without her (and wants to impress the other Kens).

Needless to say, they find that the real world is not at all like Barbieland, and many people even think that Barbie has harmed women more than helped them.
Existential crisis ensues, via some very stylish outfit changes.

If you're instinctively thinking it's not for you, there are probably better things to spend the time and money on seeing in the cinema, but when it comes out on a streaming platform or TV I'd give it a watch.

Thanks Rae. The existential crisis bit makes it sound more like a Greta Gerwig movie!

I’ve really not been inspired to go to the cinema much since lockdowns -Moonage Daydream and Ziggy Stardust aside…

I just spotted Moon is on BBC iPlayer - definitely one for fans of 2001 if you haven't already seen it. Excellent performance by Sam Rockwell and thoroughly recommended, as long as you don't mind Kevin Spacey as the voice of the ship's computer.

LindsD - we seem to like a lot of the same films, books, music and theatre. Shame we don’t live close enough to go see things together.

Another Moon fan here.
I think may even have seen it in the cinema when it was new.
