Finally watched Bullet Train. What a very strange film. Crikey.

I’ve seen three David Leitch pictures, and apart from them being very stylish and hugely violent they are all totally different.

I’ll try to watch Hobbs and Shaw next time I’ve got the Mojo Dojo Casa House to myself for an evening.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage on Netflix.

I don't know why this film exists.

I've thought about it overnight.

Nope, I'm out.

Barbie night last night. Oppenheimer was my favourite of the two this week, Barbie was good with some really excellent bits (both in social analysis terms and in terms of just being funny and entertaining) but wasn't quite up there as good as I'd hoped it would be. Some really great ideas in there, and maybe on a second watch I'd pick up on some of the more subtle digs at the patriarchy that probably flew over my (male) head. Packed cinema though, good to see.

3.5/5 for Barbie, 4-4.5/5 for Oppenheimer for me as cinema experiences.

Son of a Pronator Man
I went to see Barbie yesterday. To be honest I hadn’t expected that I would go and see it as I’d assumed it was a genuine Barbie film aimed at people (mostly young girls) who wanted to see a film about their heroine doing Barbie things with Barbie’s friends. But friends told me it wasn’t like that so I thought I’d take a chance. It’s not a kid’s film at all and most of the content will go over the heads of young children. The message of the film that gender equality requires men to abandon toxic masculine roles is not compatible with Barbie and what the toy represents. I’m surprised that Mattel approved the script. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the allusions to some classic film moments.

Yes, Mattel definitely took a risk there. Kudos to them for allowing their execs to be so well parodied. I doubt they'll sell any more dolls as a consequence, but they can at least point to their engagement as demonstrating that they are not entirely on the wrong side of current gender issues, despite some of their product lines.

Asteroid City for me and Le Jelfs this evening.
An absurdly late start time of 9:30, but looking forward to it.

Because I am a shareholder in the UPP, I got advance notice (and £5 tickets) for today's screenings. I didn't realise until brief the pre-film intro that, of course, they were 70, 60 and 50 years ago, d'oh.

1953 From Here to Eternity

1963 The Birds
1973 The Long Goodbye

I went to see the last film, The Long Goodbye as I know Robert Altman as the master storyteller. You can see where Altman pays his debts, and there some scenes which are almost deliberately clunky (Great roleplay from the uncredited ginger cat in the first act, BTW. I guess its later scenes were cut for brevity 😉 ). Elliot Gould makes a surprisingly convincing Marlowe, and plays up to the audience: he knows he's following in the footsteps of Bogart. Packed house, I enjoyed that!

Some good films there Oranj. From Here to Eternity is one of the better films from that era. Ernest Borgnine plays a nasty character.

Looks good Oranj. I’ve never seen that film. Love that era for cinema though.
