MuddyMeanderer, I like your lateral thinking there!
I didn't see it myself but Mrs J2R reported seeing a squirrel being visibly thwarted by the slippery bottle this morning, which brings a warm glow to my heart. But yes, I'm sure they're scheming, planning a way round it. A couple of years ago I obstructed their passage to the feeder from above with the plastic lid of a tub of bird food (I liked the irony). But they ended up just chewing away all around the edges until they could get past easily enough. Clever little devils - I can't help admiring them. Honestly, I've worked with people less resourceful than these guys.

An array of owls calling tonight. Impossible to tell just how many and in fact how many possible different species.

Just had 4 large skeins of Geese fly over my Nottingham house. Got my camera just in time for the last and smallest one, but I think i know where the others went

Pretty sure that we have a Tawny Owl in our local park. I’ve heard the ‘hoot’ several times when out in the dark and they played the same call on Winterwatch last night.

Yeah, the Tawnys are easiest for me to vocal ID. The first two I heard were two calling to each other. Not sure one of the others was the "twit" part, and could very easily have been one of the first two anyway.

First winter sighting this year of a nice male Blackcap in my garden. And a Goldcrest.
