Cracking run this morning, well the run was actually rubbish, but that's another story.

Firstly a couple of wheatear on the rocks by the sea. Then followed by a kestrel on one of the fields, but being increasingly mobbed by a huge flock of goldfinches of all things! Never seen one this close to home before though, maybe that was why they were mobbing it?

Saved the best til last. A short eared owl, had to stop my run as it was quartering a field and then shot down and caught something which it then settled down to eat. Fabulous sight. We had four over winter on the river a few years back, but never seen one here. I've seen some pictures of it, but in a different place, saw all the local watchers about half a mile further up as it's obviously moved hunting ground.

Other end of the country, I'm on the North Wales coast. Short eared owls seem to be every 2-3 years

OK, thanks, saves me a trip up there! Short-eared owls pitch up quite often along the North Norfolk coast (with an astounding 50 turning up at Titchwell one day a few years ago), but I've never seen one here.

A small flock, maybe around ten, birds were feeding at the top of a group of largish hawthorn trees, they flew off as I approached and I could only see underneath which was very light in colour. My instinct was fieldfare, is this likely with colouring?

Fieldfare are approx the size of a mistle thrush ie a bit bigger than a blackbird. Redwing aren’t much bigger than startling

Obvious question D2 is how big were they?

I was hoping you weren't going to ask as I know that's a way of telling!! They were very high up but now you have asked.......... bigger than a black bird...... So instinct correct then..... feels proud :)

And hawthorns are a likely place, too. Good berries where you are?

Amazing berries this year, the trees look as if they are struggling under the weight of them all. :)
