Down your way at the moment Steve and popped into Newport Wetlands yesterday afternoon and was surprised to hear that they had both Swallows and Sand Martins yesterday morning! Around 20 of both.

My in-laws told me a story about over-wintering hirundines in the UK - maybe swallows - living around industrial units or power stations that generate large quantities of ambient heat

Anybody seen a redwing or fieldfare yet? I've seen reports that they are 'trickling' in.

2 of the bittern have returned to the reserve near me. Usually have 4 so still waiting/hoping for the other 2. Kingfishers also still showing pretty well.

Some serious mobbing action on my run just now. An angry mob of rooks were in pursuit of a buzzard, and in fact even attacked it in the air - a big flutter of feathers came down just in front of me. It took shelter in a tree, but once it flew off again, it was promptly set upon by a group of magpies! Not one of its best days.

Swallows and Martins usually linger down here in very small numbers until the end of the month and then a few into November.
REDWING! My first early this morning..quite late arrival date for me. And a Chiffchaff in the garden an hour later.

steve45, love it when you see winter and summer visitors overlapping. I remember a few years ago watching some fieldfares feeding in a field above which house martins swooped for flies.

Redwing again this morning but overall very few birds about to see on my run despite perfect conditions. A solitary Skylark overhead flying south and that's all.

Wrens singing loudly last few days here. Weather has been good mind so maybe they think it’s spring - February on birds’ calendars ;-)
