Seems there may be a special shoe for the next sub 2 attempt: instagram.com Re level playing field/ stifling tech. I don't know, we'll see. I liked it when shoe choice was essentially a preference. I certainly don't want there to be only one game in town at elite level (as there currently is given it's probably conservative to say the shoes are worth a minute over a marathon). Also at youth level I wouldn't want there to be cost barriers to performing well. I don't object to the principle of finding more efficient cushioning though (still not sure about the plate) and it's really the current monopoly at elite level that's concerning. I guess costs will come down if they become the norm so will be fine. Still surprised there's no real competitors yet. |

I think they might want to concentrate on doping first.

That could literally be said for any concern you had about the sport.

I do sympathise with the monopoly/cost issue. OTOH my previous race shoes would have been 130 quid if I hadn't got old stock at a discount, and I think I paid 180 for the VF. So it's not completely out of reach. And it's not Nike's fault that no-one else has yet produced a shoe that's as good (and unfortunate for any who don't get on with their particular shape). At least they are readily available, originally the supply was too small.

SPR - the photo of Eliud with his huge pacing team shows him ( and looks like everyone ) wearing the pink Next% - doesn't mean he won't wear something different on race day of course |

When you say there's no real competition, what did Hawkins run in in Doha? They weren't VFs were they? So he's either better than some very very good elites, or the shoes he wore gave him similar efficiency?

I think the consensus was the VFs don't give elites the same benefits as they do us mere mortals. He ran 2.10ish I think? Which was 2 minutes outside his pb, but given the others were 2.05/2.06 capable, they were further outside (they were cat and mousing for a fair bit, he caught them a little cold). |

On another one, now I'm in the market for some VFs at last the 160 bargains seem to have dried up. Pro direct is 189 currently. Ouch.

He ran a great race and (though the benefits probably vary among runners) might well have done better in the VF. Of course you can't simply knock two mins off his time and say he would have won by a distance, it's not a pure time trial at their level.

Well it depends what shape those runners were in on that day. Many elite have had variable marathon performances. Also I think many would say Hawkins ran the best race on the day and if he was as good as the others he'd have won. That's why people like championship races as opposed to paced 'time trials'. Callum wouldn't have been up there in London. There's also a possibility he was in a prototype shoe that was closer to the VPs. |
