I haven't heard the Nikes are to not be suitable for 5k to 10k (they certainly still fill the start lines there and some have used them on track) and I can't see how a shoe like the MetaRacer or RC Elite (on the same maximal route) would be any better anyway. If you were talking about the Reebok Floatride Run Fast Pro then there's a choice and there's certainly reason to wonder if that may be faster over shorter distances. TBH, I'm surprised you haven't considered the Reebok given what you say you want from a shoe. |

I was just thinking that the 4% is such a comfy shoe to run in that it might be nice to extend their life by converting them to an XC shoe too. Benefits at all distances for me J2R (4%, next%). The Nike may not be optimised on the shorter distances but I think most see benefits there too. They are also just so nice to run in that I can’t really imagine racing in anything else now tbh. I’m not sure about the the returns policy on the other shoes but if you buy the Nike and don’t like them you can just return them. Have a go! |

WW - Would have a lot of broken ankles if the 4% was an XC shoe, lol.

Are Nike letting you run in the shoe and return if you don't like them?

Colorado trails are 90% dry and dusty, 10% closed due to mud on trail! I have broken PBs in 10k with the VF, confident I would also for 5k if I ran one in good condition. At least, a year or two ago I would have. Not so sure I will manage again now! I can imagine they might be less popular at shorter distances with elites who need a sprint finish. |

SPR, yes, you can go for a trial run within 30 days and if you don't like them send them back. From 30-60 days you can still send them back if they're unworn and unwashed.

BG - That's pretty good TBF, certainly a good way to get people into them.

SPR - Fair play. Those that I’d seen had even had the stack height shaved down though. A proper job!

SPR, I was just going on the reviews I'd read which seemed to suggest this. Happy to hear that the VFs are good across the board. I just read an interesting article which suggested that the VFs might also be a great shoe to do training in, rather than just racing, for the simple reason that if they leave your legs less beaten up, you're actually able to do more training without damaging yourself. If this is the case, it would be interesting to know if there is some distinction between ultimate performance and reduced muscle fatigue. I would hope that it might be possible to buy rather cheaper and/or more durable shoes which you can use for training and get the reduced muscle fatigue benefits, and thus be able to increase training load/frequency. There would be no need for these to be especially fast, if they're just for training rather than racing. I'm wondering whether one of the Reebox models which use PEBAX, such as the Reebok Floatride Run (SPR mentions the Fast Pro race version above) might do the job. |
