Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

When I worked at Crown House Engineering, the East Midlands lot, our do's were on a Friday or Saturday night at Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor (https://yeoldebell-hotel.co.uk/). Everyone stopped over, hotel rooms on expense accounts, spouses allowed, the works. Food was awful but good times were had.

My last one there was Xmas '97, thankfully we had already turned in before some of the Sheffield lads decided to recreate "The Full Monty" from that year's hit film on the dancefloor. We heard about it all at breakfast the following morning!

Well you can tell who worked / works in the NHS.

Only in your own time in your own money, apart from one place that was tiny (about 5 of us) and the pathologists took us out for lunch. Then I had to catch up with everything when I got back!

I worked in a very small office so it was always the local posh restaurant for lunch, back to the pub opposite the office after for a few drinks, then back to the castle for a few more drinks.

As it happens it's their party today - so pleased I am not there to attend and deal with the boss

We always had great night outs in one of the posh hotels usually paid for by the partners or latterly heavily subsided. There was always plenty of wine for the table and a kitty on every table. They are going out for lunch toland so I'm meeting them post lunch for drinks

The only decent official ones we ever had were in Japan, not actually Christmas of course but there was an equivalent end-of-year "forget the year" party. Everyone was basically well behaved, there was decent food and unlimited alcohol, it was generally a fun experience that occasionally ended up in a karaoke bar or throwing up on a train platform etc.

Prior to that in the UK the Christmas party was a grim lunch out with everyone trying to pretend the institute wasn't going down the shitter and next year would be better. Unfortunately it was and it wasn't, respectively.

Latterly my wife and I have had annual company christmas dinners consisting of a good home-cooked meal and wine on expenses for the two of us. Of course that's our own money really but you do save a few quid in tax.

I had a good Christmas night last night. Weird though as my son was also there. Funny when some people realised.

I think my earlier ones were probably more enjoyable, I don't really know as I can't remember that long ago. (or possibly even the next day)

Best ones ever were in my first ever job. The company took over one of the catering suites at a long since demolished leisure facility in Manchester and ferry the whole workforce there on coaches and take you to a drop off point close(ish) to the part of town you lived in afterwards (make sure you get on the right coach!).

Ah, nostalgia isn't what it used to be.... ;)

Not a Christmas do, but one of the company's (re)branding events led to the then 3rd largest UK insurance company being barred from the NEC hotels for 3 years. And Alistair McGowan was mocked and booed offstage at the after dinner event. To much free alcohol, too little forethought!
