Went out for lunch & met someone we hadn’t seen for a few weeks. Turned out they’d had a heart attack. Thin, fairly active, non smoker, minimal drinker, a bolt from the blue. I’m getting scared to ask the where is so and so these days question. |

We spend significantly more now we're retired, we have more time for cafes and shopping and go on more holidays. There's plenty of unemployed people who are supposedly looking for work so we've created job vacancies for them. We weren't "experienced" at work, we were "stuck in our old ways" so we've solved that problem. We're no longer claiming tax relief on pension contributions, we now pay income tax on our pensions... I'm far more economically active now I'm retired This, I spend differently. I buy more running shoes instead of sensible work ones for instance. I'm odd in that I 'retired' twice - without a pension the first time and I did get bored a bit - but I was too young in my 40s and after 3 years or so went to work in a school 5 x the stress for 20% of the pay! and back to a previous conversation, nearly 10 years after I took redundancy, GSK gave me a nice share award as a celebration of one of my drugs' success. I'd not have know the scheme existed if they hadn't contacted me about it. Now, my pension from that career is a lot more I was earning when working in the school, so surely I'm more economically active than then? also Kinks, You really Got Me was no1 when I was born. |

"Economically active" isn't about spending, it's about producing. When you are earning, you are (supposedly) producing something of value, that you get paid for. A pension is just delayed consumption that's been stored up from your productive years. Admittedly there is something deeply unsatisfactory about a measure that completely ignores the contribution made by voluntary work. There's a huge charitable/voluntary/social economy underpinned by the efforts of retired people. And anyway there's really no good reason why we should insist on producing more and more than we can ever usefully need. The main factor underpinning our retirement was the realisation that we'd already amassed more than we would ever need for our fairly comfortable (but not hugely lavish) lifestyle. We could have worked longer, made more money, but....why? |

We reach a point where we're not adding value with our experience, we're actually holding things up with our antiquated methods and younger team members can offer far more. I've seen several cases where companies have genuinely benefited from someone leaving even though they were considered irreplaceable, possibly including myself. Producing rubbish isn't being productive. |

I had a weird 1:1 with my manager today. I was wfh and joined on teams to find my manager and one of the managers above him in a room. I wondered what they were about to say. Turned out I hadn’t got to an email that explained the call was repurposed and a fourth person was joining to discuss a possible thing we might do. |
