Lots of volunteering opportunities out there Fenners. No idea what your capabilities are but there’s stuff like Fell Rescue, volunteer firefighters, stuff like that. RNLI even, if you live near the sea. Any of that might float your boat (see what I did there) and give you what you need.

‘Buzz from work’ - I think for me in the later years was just relief that some stressful challenge had been survived without disaster.

Such was the volume and difficulty of the workload that ‘a job well done’ was unreachable. If you took enough time to do something well, that meant other things were neglected and were going to bite you.

You had to do ‘just’ enough across everything to keep the wolf from the door. I love being able devote myself to doing non work things well in retirement and get plenty of buzz from many areas.

Fenners, there are not many like you. Work for me is a necessary evil and hasn’t given me a buzz very often in my 38 years.

I moan a lot about things, but unbelievably it’s getting worse with lots of issues potentially coming to a head.

Frustratingly the role I have could be a good role, but there are so many senior management issues the role is near impossible.

I have kept up my GMC registration so far but will probably jack it in soon. Possibly when I respond to their request to confirm that I'm no longer on a Performers' List.

Can't say I was getting a buzz from work in my later years, Fenners. A bout of burnout, a period of unthinkable stress, then a few years in a job that was mostly nice with the odd bit of unwarranted hostility thrown in. Not missing it in the slightest. If I did, I'd get another job.

Another one here who would have to think long and hard to remember any buzz at work.

But, I'm currently in a rather nice New York diner with the family, and that's a better buzz :-)

Perhaps, it is because I don't want to be promoted, I don't need to work, I work because it is fulfilling.

Plenty of buzz from scientific discoveries and I’ve managed a few that I wasn’t being paid for. In fact I think the best were things I wasn’t being paid for!

I love being retired.

Jetting off to Mallorca for 13 days today, no worries about ‘annual leave entitlement’, no last minute scramble to complete work stuff before holiday (wasting the first 2/3 days just to de-stress), no creeping death of the return to work in last 2/3 days.

Glorious.
