As chosen by Night-owl, and written by Antti Tuomainen (Author) and David Hackston (Translator), The Rabbit Factor is Jan 2024's Book Group Book of the Month Book Choice Book.

When you have feasted your eyes upon its insides, drip your thoughts like paint-drops from the end of Jackon Pollock's extendable paint brush holder onto the canvas of discussion thread below.

It’s an adventure, not an amusement. I’ll just park that thought there for you.

Well, what to say? The rabbit pulled it out of the hat. When I began this book I didn't think I was going to like it at all. By half way three I was keen to get back to it whenever I could, especially to follow the blossoming relationship between Henri and Laura. I thought I had spotted the way the plot was going by then, but it turned out I was wrong, or rather not completely correct.

As the above suggests, I enjoyed reading it, but was it "any good"? I'm not sure. It was just, okay. Diverting as an amusement, but not memorable and not the sort of thing you'd be compelled to recommend to others. I'm going to give it a solid 7/10 mark as it was pleasant company of many walks and drives (audiobook), so thank you, Owlie, for your choice.

I did think that there was one major plot hole that seriously let the book down.

Henri is an actuary. His whole raison d'etre is calculating risk. Yet when he starts the loan business he does not do even consider the possibility of people defaulting on their loans, let alone carry out any credit scoring on the recipients.

Copied from my book list.

The writing style was a bit annoying and overwritten, but the narrator was clearly supposed to be on the spectrum and I think it was often reflecting his inner dialogue. Diverting enough gangster caper. Read it quickly, but found it ultimately unsatisfying. Lot of things that didn't really convince. Won't be reading any of his others.

It was kind-of engaging, but so many things didn't add up. What was going on with Laura's past? At one point I thought that she had been in a relationship with Juhani and had something to do with all his debts and dodgy loans etc. We don't know anything at all about Johanna until the very end. I gave it a 6. Just a bit annoying really.

And I agree with your plot hole.

I thought that Laura was probably related to or in a relationship with Lizard Man or the Big Man. If you've read the book, how was the marketing vamp's name spelt? It sounded like
Mint 2k, so I was thinking maybe Min Tukaii?

I'd have given it a 6.5 if the polls allowed that

Minttu K

I thought she was a really underused character. I wanted to know more about her backstory.

I finished it last night

As a book I found it an easy read didn't absolutely loved it but didn't hate it either

Some parts seemed to drag a bit

I will read the follow up book don't know if third book has been translated yet.

I did wonder if Venla would make an appearance as she was always absent maybe the other books will give the answers

And maybe the other characters will have bigger parts. Wasn't sure about Kristian was suspicious about him

I'm giving it a 7
