Mine all getting a bit droopy (oh Matron!). Couple of flower heads fallen off, but on the same plants, dozens of new smaller flower heads still coming through. More than 30 on one plant.

Mine were all a bit of a failure this year - but I still enjoyed a bit of time when they looked lovely :-) Thanks BL for inspiring another year of sunflowers!

I have two very large sunflower heads that I'm tempted to harvest the seeds from to see it it's worth it. I put a smaller one out for the birds, but they've got used to being fed the seed hearts and don't seem keen on having to shell them -
and I'm the same, would I be bothered to shell them to eat?

I'd love to do a little trespass on the sunflower field near us that got into the local paper and pinch a few heads for the seeds. They were perfect sunflowers for a mass display, around 150cm tall with nice big heads.

I've harvested the seeds from my lovely sunflowers. I think I might have to start even later next year, mine were a bit premature and excitable šŸ˜Š

I tried boiling and roasting a bunch of seeds but overdid the roasting. A few of them were ok. I was going to try again but the other flower heads have tinier seeds so I'm giving up. Any tips on how to get bigger seeds for eating?

I think I'm going to try sprouting mine for eating that way.

Bigger heads from the giant sunflowers give the biggest seeds and you have to leave the heads on until the back leaves (sepals?) of them are all brown.

Apparently then the seeds need soaking in brine overnight before drying and roasting.

Interesting RH. I took them off early to stop them being eaten by the squirrels so definitely not to the brown leaf stage. The brine and roasting would have worked ok if I hadn't overdone the roasting a little. I'll save some seed for growing next year.
