One more then I'll leave you to consider just how obsessed I am with this beautiful music:
A while back I was wittering on about the Carolinas "Beach" music and how this has integrated into northern soul quite neatly, it rose to prominence in the Stafford years (post Wigan Casino) and it's easy to identify, unashamedly blue-eyed and the big brass intros are absolutely de rigeour. This is a lovely example:
Oh hell, I just noticed another I'm nearly sure hasn't been played here! RS recently brought up the music that "Brico" posts on YouTube (Martin Barnfather) and I saw that this is one of his ..... well, fook me. I said at the time that he has some rare records, believe me this one is maybe one of the rarest of 'em all. This might be the only issue copy of "She's Wanted" in existence, the rest are all demos.
I remember you talking about the “Beach” music. It was definitely interesting to me and not wittering. As a fellow soul/music in general obsessive/nerd, of course.
Love “She’s Wanted”. Really classic NS - everyone straight on the dancefloor. Love the subtle parping sax(?) in the background. Tight drums. Good voice. Great track!
What has everyone been listening to lately? I've been stuck in a very interesting debate about contemporary stuff and what has been the best live performance in 2024. I voted for Jessie Ware doing "Pearls" in the BBC Piano Room, but I was a lone voice. The biggest vote (by miles) went to Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga doing "Die With a Smile" in Las Vegas and I have to say it's fecking brilliant, it will sweep the board at the Grammys.
Anyone here a fan of Bruno? I might have said this before, but believe me - that is a man who has listened to a LOT of soul music in his lifetime and he's a tremendous talent. Word on the street is that LG practically begged to accompany him on this record and she's a pretty outstanding talent herself
Anyhow, as a change from arcane vintage soul music please enjoy
I listen to a lot, I guess it goes with the territory. I'd hate to be thought of someone who was stuck in a 60s/70s musical timewarp, there's more to me than that.
Just for balance my reserve vote went to Jungle for "Back on 74" at the Brit awards.
I thought I might indulge of my "other" passion for your entertainment
Feel free to post, but please do try and keep it soulful. No funk or ska please! I maintain an off-line list of all the tracks posted, if you would like a copy please feel free to fmail me.
