Love Lettuce
I can appreciate all the flaws people have highlighted, and they're all fair comments that my adult self can agree with. However I approached TDIR as though my 9 year old self was reading the book and on that basis it was a great read. I like indulging the childish side of my imagination from time to time

The Scribbler
I thought this was a great choice for a December book. I loved the descriptions of the snow and countryside and life on the farm which seemed very realistic. I also liked the dreamlike moving from one stat to another. But some of the adventures felt a bit rushed, with miraculous reversals of fortune at the last minute.
I thought I had read it as a child, but I don't think that I did. I would probably not have criticised the rush of adventure then! Also interesting to compare with The Secret Commonwealth which I read over Christmas. No spoilers, but I did think it dragged on bit.

Finished this - the first book on my Kindle. I wasn't really enjoying it at first, bit too descriptive and clunky, then I mentioned to my sister and BiL that I was reading it and they both waxed lyrical about how much they had enjoyed it as children. I'm not sure why I didn't read it then. I'm clearly very suggestible, as I started enjoying it much more after that (I was also a lot more relaxed, so perhaps more open to getting immersed). I did enjoy reading it, and was struck by how much of that was echoed then later in Star Wars/Harry Potter. I guess the old light vs dark battle is played out in many places, including The Bible, obviously.
Got a bit impatient with it towards the end - the whole hunt thing was just a bit too much for me, but overall I liked it. Don't think I'll read any of the others in the series. Gave it a 6.

Totally agree with everyone on the negative side, especially Peregrinator, who sums it up perfectly. I you lot.

Peregrinator said everything I wanted to say pretty much, so now that Christmas is over and the truce can end... I don't really need to say any more anyway.

Finally finished it - I would say that I now remember that the latter stages of the book just don't engage me as much as the first two thirds. I still feel the first few chapters make me feel at home and Christmassy. Glad some of of you enjoyed it.

Hello. Will read back momentarily. Before that I shall say that I loved it again, even though it was only two years since I last read it.
I shall be forever grateful to our own Miss Greythorne for sharing it with me.

Enjoyed Perrers-Grinners-Aters review muchly, even if I didn’t totally agree with it.
This is, of course, very much my genre. And it’s not ‘fantasy fiction’ at all - it’s squarely UF pretending not to be (see also the Harry twins - Potter on Team Good and Dresden on Team It’s Complicated)
