Didn’t Steve Redgrave develop diabetes through eating loads of energy bars, sugary snacks etc? Not good for teeth either

You could read the latest sacn report here: gov.uk Technical in places, but should cover everything. It is about 5 years old now, so there could be better evidence now. |

It doesn't say that the high energy ( sugary) diet caused the Type 2 diabetes for Redgrave, just that he was diagnosed with it. Also, he continued the high energy diet and just injected more insulin, more regularly than most non-athletes with T2D would. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/celebrities/steve-redgrave.html#:~:text=At%20the%20time%2C%20Redgrave%20was,sugar%20diet%20following%20his%20diagnosis. On Diabetes UK website it doesn't actually say "sugar causes diabetes". TYPE 2 DIABETES RISK FACTORS A number of factors can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. These include: Being overweight or obese Having a waist size of 31.5 inches or more (women) or more than 37 inches (men) Eating an unhealthy diet Physical inactivity Having a first-degree relative with type 2 diabetes Having high blood pressure or raised cholesterol levels Being of South Asian and African-Caribbean descent Smoking As I don't have 7 out of 8 of those risk factors, my reading would be, eat as much sugar-shizzle as you like, you are protected by the other 7 risk factors being zero? Or am I just reaching the conclusion I want to reach. Is there a Diabetes thread in Fetch? I could go off and ask! ![]() |

The key point of the sacn report that most miss is the fibre target. If I remember correctly, they also say that to have an effect on teeth you'd have to cut out sugar entirely. |

Why would you want to eat lots of sugar?

Is that to me Dio? I don't drink, smoke, or eat meat. It's my only vice! I like choc, sweets and cakes. I don't want to kill myself, so I want to understand how damaging it might be. Specifically relating to this thread, sweets are seen as a good diversion from alcohol, specifically advocates by AA. |
