Grast_girl, it felt like an absence for me, and a bit boring, for quite a while. But after time it feels normal. And now it just seems weird that people even think about drinking alcohol and just not something that I even contemplate. It's great!

Like Joops says, so many good things to think about (off up to the WHW for the big adventure weekend tomorrow Joops. Can you imagine 36 hours no sleep, 100 miles of driving and 25 miles of running - plus alcohol?! Just wouldn't be possible! I'd rather This Way!!) :-) G

I'm envious G, missing out this year due to helping Sandra on the SDW. Who are you supporting?

I am doing leg 2 of the whw relay (Glencoe to kinlochleven). Much better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than in the pub!

joops if you ever need a crew for another whw attempt I am 10 miles from the start and would be happy to help.

Happy, hope your crewing goes well,

Linds, drinking dreams are true nightmares, hopefully just temporary.

I am also envious ☺️G, I won't be involved in the race for the first time since 2010. shanksi and I were going to crew for m1nty but he pulled out. shanksi is now being a leader for a DofE expedition so I will be staying here, running parkrun with my 9yo and going to a bbq. I won't miss the midgies!

I didn't not have a drink last night. I am feeling it this morning, missing feeling as good as I have done the rest of the week. I don't even know really why I bought the wine, I didn't even think about it. None tonight will be easy, even if it is a Friday.

We'll miss you mrs s and Joops both. Stalwarts of the WHW family as you are. You'll be back. I started this in 2009 crewing for Karen D, then Flip, Santa, Andy, Kenny, my own in 2015, and last year marshalling. The only year I wasn't doing anything officially (the year I was concentrating on my marathon time in London), I came up anyway and ran up and down the route handing out drinks and jelly babies and hugs and went to the finish line to see the winners finishing!

I'm crewing for KJT (Kenny Tindall) again this year. His second time doing it. He's got a target time to smash this time. No pressure!

Iaincr - enjoy the relay. Lovely way to get to run some of the nicest bits of the route.

Dio, none today is all you need to do. Yesterday is gone, pay it no heed. The next 24 hours is going to be great. :-) G

I've crewed for Loon Dod, MikeR, Wee Rhino, and Chris Cowley, and run it 3 times. I'm not planning to run it again for a few years but will hopefully crew next year. I really enjoyed Hardmoors and it's given me a taste for English ultras so I'm hoping to get in to Lakeland 50 next year with the hope of doing the 100 in 2019. Also Cumbria Way. If I don't get in to L50 I was thinking Great Glen Way since I haven't done that one. Have you got ultra plans ☺️G?

Your Hardmoors 110 was fantastic achievement V. And you're right, loads more great ultras out there. Lakes, the NDW and SDWs and overseas obv. But not for me. All just a bit too hard work thank you! Half maras only for me. And the odd marathon! :-) G

Thanks Iain but I have no ambitions to run it, I am strictly crew, it's what I'm best at!

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Some acronyms, in case people use them:
JFT - Just for today
ODAAT - One day at a time
KIS - Keep it simple
TBOGUA - The Benefits Of Giving Up Alcohol (the title of this thread!)

New feature: article/blog of the month (period may change randomly!) Swittle's wonderful 14,611 days blog: (see links below)

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

And a great list of Alternative Drinks started by the lovely LindsD:

Please add to these articles and make them as valuable as possible! Thanks! :-) G

And one from way back when...
Dirt Monkey's brilliant blog on TBOGUA too - go try this...

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
