Oh, I better add - skull fracture was totally non-running injury.

Almost none. And the waiting list would be so long as to render it unnecessary as you will have rested for 6-7 weeks anyway.
Unless you really go for it with your GP.
Treatment is rest only, so diagnosis is irrelevant unless there is an alternative diagnosis that would require different treatment. This may mean that you get a plain X-ray.
I reckon you will get advised rest and a physio referral at most- they will be better able to work out muscular things than the average GP.
If you are lucky and your GP is bang up for sports medicine it might be a different story.

Skull fractures are looked for as they alter your risk of significant intracranial injury. And they show up really easy as the bone is thin and the contents of the skull are radiolucent, as we like to say in the trade.

I've registered with a practice that has a doc with a sports medicine qualification. and being able to go in and ask what you want - or tell them what you would like helps!

Yes, with my skull fracture I was knocked unconscious and was still having blinding headaches a month later which were affecting me at work. That was why I was sent for an x-ray.

Hello, I m still on my way back from a cracked up shin. Agree with pretty much everybody else. Its a case of a few weeks of doing really dull strength exercises, watching tv while on a wobble board and cycling everywhere. Book a session with your physio if unsure about exercies and stretching plans. No real point in worrying about scans or x ray anything severe and you would nt be jogging around. Go see a sports physio ahead of anybody. It sucks but these things clear up.

Yes I was thinking femur, but I guess that I would have had to have done something pretty hardcore to damage such a big bone. Lou I do like the idea of having a specialist sports med doctor - at least then they'll appreciate the difficulty you have understanding their instruction of 'just rest then until it stops'. Thanks for the sympathy/advice, may just rest up until next week when I'm at home and see the physio then. And ask the doctor thursday. And order my housemates to do all my shopping and cook all my food for me (and then my mother once I get home ). Looks like some swimming and more spinning classes for me then.

JohnnyO - I got xrays, and two bone scans for mine on the NHS with about 2 weeks wait (actually could have been quicker but I was away on holiday). You need to get into a good frature clinic is all, ask your gp for a choose and book appointment at your nearest decent hospital.
You need to get diagnosis confirmed because otherwise you could end up doing more damage when you restart running if you havent addressed the root cause of your injury.

Just come to this a bit late but am looking for info re stress fractures as have one in hip sustained during VLM. BUT - I noticed in the first post that you are taking ibuprofen - my consultant told me to stop taking ibuprofen as although this is the right thing to do if you have a muscle injury (I thought I did) it will actually slow down healing of a bone injury. I think paracetomol is fine. I have also been told to completely stay off it inc cycling and swimming so you might want to check what exercise you are doing with a physio. I guess it depends on severity tho

Have seen the doctor and she thinks muscular...PHEW! however, did say that if it doesn't get better after 3 weeks of no running to get it checked out again, and in the mean time to do lots of stretching and to learn to listen to my body and not keep ignoring pain...I have discovered that all I can do swimming wise is breastroke, as the kicking action for both crawls is painful. Was recommended co-codamol for the pain so took that for a few days - thanks for the info about ibuprofen jen! also tubi-gripping and icing like a crazy person. However, I have also discovered that dancing is bad for it - finished my exams this week and have been going out and have had to resort to one-legged dancing and going home early. But that is entirely my own fault and I am stupid for doing so.
