The Teaboy
In Rough Ride, Kimmage admitted to doing Amphetamines during a crit. He isn't squeaky either and has admitted it. All he does is call out the hypocrisy.

Fascinating story CB, a non pro (in effect), as he doesn't draw a wage, and there's got to be some sympathy for his reasons for starting (being knocked off a bike, being deprived of earnings for months) and suddenly he's sucked in. He's right to come clean. One of the interesting test fails that Lance Armstrong had was for cortisone, which is allowed if prescribed, so he simply went and got a backdated prescription for saddle-sore. So where does the line exist that prevents Vaughters from taking treatment for a wasp sting, and allows Armstrong to take treatments and backdate his?

Chris Not sure I do have sympathy as such. There are other ways of insuring your earnings in the event of accident, like insurance. That said however there are two things that strike me here. 1. That other athletes were using it even at his level and it was a well known trodden path 2. He was never tested even when competing at nationals. Of course that then brings back memories of 7/8 years ago news.bbc.co.uk In regards to how Armstrong may have gotten preferential treatment then might this have anything to do with it? cyclingnews.com Clearly Armstrong didnt have just a hold on the US Postal Team but also UCI through his association with Hein Verbruggen and , through reading a few articles, Im now wondering why Pat MQuaid is so defensive over Armstrong and UCI's role |

Listened to it SPR shocking stuff indeed. Millar did have a point though as bad as all this seems at least cycling is trying to catch the cheaters even if the 'Omerta' still exists. Not seeing many other sports going to these lengths

I think my point is that we are quick to judge from a position of "comfort" as this is a hobby rather than a money earner for 99.9% of people on here. It's hard to envisage me or anyone else I know ever taking illegal performance enhancing drugs for any reason, but becuase it's hard to envisage doesn't mean it's any less likely if we were pros in a similar situation. It's like all those in the UK who claim in the 2nd world war, if we'd be invaded we'd all have been in "the resistance" supposedly like 95% of France was meant to be (but actually wasn't). In reality most would have been like Jersey, handing over the Jews at the first whiff of trouble. I suspect most of us in a situation where it's a day job, and there is significant peer pressure and it appears that everyone else is doing it, then there would be very few Bassons among us. I mean who after all has caffeine drinks or gels before or during a race? Of course I'm not endorsing it or saying it is right, just that I understand why it might happen that's all and have "some" sympathy. |
