Brilliant blog Ken. Sorry if I trailed the big story a bit early. I was excited. As you say, it's just a number, but 4 hours is a great time, either way. As JJ Flash and others have said, on a different course on a different day, that would have been sub 4. For now, just rest up and bask in the glory of a great marathon PB. A reward for all your hard training. Hopefully we can all enjoy some mile, 5K, 10K action over next few weeks and months. :-)G

Still a solid PB It does indeed get fiddly in places with kerbs and a couple of tight corners so anyone can lose both time and rhythm around there. You should be very proud!

I reckon Ken lost those 10 seconds in the first mile - too much going on. however the problem with marathons is that it is easy to suggest (mostly to ones self) that you could have run each mile 10seconds quicker, which far from reality.

Every mile 10 seconds quicker? No chance!
The start was a blinkin' mess. Minus 5 points.

In delusional hindsight 10 or even 5 seconds doesn't seem that much, when of course it biddy well is. or is it just me who thinks like that?

I'm sure we all do, Chify. If I could only knock 30 secs a mile off I'd be laughing

BCRB, you're talking about 5 or 10s per mile, right? i.e. up to 4.5 mins off your marathon PB? Yes, that's a big deal. Potentially 6 months hard training. Or a year. Or never. To get from 3:03 to 2:59 or from 3:19 to 3:14 or whatev.
But Ken's was 10s for whole mara. So 0.5s per mile. Or 500 miliseconds per mile, if you prefer! I think that's in the realm of butterfly wings could effect if! :-)G

Ah, but it's just a number. If my PB had been, say, 2:22:15, and I got it down to 2:20:10 would anyone be bothered about those 10 seconds? I use these numbers just to illustrate a point of course, as they never even enter my fantasies.
What matters most is the PB, and the whole run.
But the main reason for coming back to the thread is to say the bit I missed off my message yesterday.
I was sorry not to be able to join those Fetchies who gathered for a beer after. I suspect beer on top of my gels would have caused a psychadelic yawn, but it would have been nice to get together with you all for comunal hugs.
Sadly Union and I had to scurry away to say thanks to our hosts of the weekend, then catch a plane back to Edinburgh. Maybe we'll meet some other time.
Droothy Ken
PS for those of a more southerly inclination, droothy is a grand Scottish word for thirsty, normally applied to a need for beer!

If they sort the start out it has potential to be a really good event.
