Fields, my 3rd year uni example was 1990 - I don't think either of us weighed more than 80kg! It might have been a flanker or 2nd row that he tackled, so a bit bigger, but I really don't remember. I think it was just a head on the wrong side, accidental impact with a knee or boot or something.

I agree with you, the size and speed of the guys playing now must be making the game more dangerous. But I don't think making them smaller or slower is going to be enforceable. But laws to minimize head impacts or spine/back twists or impact are required? And to be prosecuted ruthlessly, zero tolerance, to get players into the habit of minimizing risk. Not just foul play, accidents too. Trying to actively not put yourself of opponent at risk?

I think long term rugby has the risk of being like Gridiron in the US - not really played at an amateur adult level

There was a good article by one of the rugby union writers in the grauniad espousing that idea a month or two back, fields. Think I posted a link here.

It’s of real concern to me. I don’t know what the solution is though. Weight limits for those outside the tight 5? I know that’s not the solution, I can think of tons of problems with that as I typed it.

it would never fly as it seems counterintuitive to player welfare but I believe reducing the number of tactical substitutions available to coaches would mean players would need to be fitter and capable of going the full 80 and therefore a bit lighter.

Needs to be zero tolerance on bad tackles too. Players will change behaviour

My young lad (FlyingScotsman on here) was dragged out of a ruck and dumped on his head a couple of weeks ago whilst playing for the county Colts against the local public school. Fortunately he goes to the gym(!!). Sat out the rest of the first half but satisfied us (and our friend who's a nurse) that he was ok to go back on. I'm still waiting for a satisfactory explanation as to why to offender was also allowed to rejoin the game after half time...

Zero tolerance has to be the way ahead.

If anyone wants to watch a version of the game where tackling is strictly optional ;-) well good news, Super Rugby Pacific kicks off on Friday

There’s no TV deal but you can stream it online for £49.99 which works out at approx £0.50 / game from www.sanzaarrugby.tv

Seems like The Rugby Championship will have the same arrangement too.

The last 3 words of your first sentence are the reason the offender was allowed to continue.
