I trust it's not a Norman gateway. What a weird area it is around Gosport, must go there someday.

A lot of my local runs incorporate it and it’s associated pebble beaches and golf course. It’s pretty much ruined now but it certainly has a presence.
It was built in the 1860’s, one of a series of defence structures around The Solent known as Palmerston’s forts - or follies, because they almost bankrupted the country.
Every few years a developer attempts to convert it into “luxury apartments”, publishes some aspirational artists impressions and then goes bust. We appear to be in another hiatus at the moment so the vandals are destroying a few more bits.

Is there a Palmerston fort near to where the Hayling ferry lands at Eastney? I vaguely remember seeing it when Mr Ness and I did some cycling in the area a while ago. Think it was visits by appointment only though.

You might mean ‘Horse Sand’ Fort Ness? It’s just offshore from Eastney and is a Palmerston Fort, which, along with ‘No Man’s Land’ Fort, defended the eastern entrance to The Solent.
Eastney is also the location of a disused Royal Marines barracks.

Ah. It might have been the Marines Barracks. We did go in to the Marines Museum but that’s further along if my memory serves me correctly. I think it’s been moved since my visit there too.
