Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Great deserved win, and yes poor Lampaert, that was ridiculous.

Eurosport seem to forget that MVDP hasn't had much build up. Change of style was necessitated by the legs and it was impressive that he managed to pull off Flanders.

Heard an interesting take from Lanterne Rouge on the Lampaert incident - general view was that in this case you could argue it was a genuine accident and that the spectator the organizers and Lampaert all contributed.

In short: Lampaert was weaving in and out to take respite off the cobbles, Spectators had limited time to react but maybe shouldn't have been stood on the tarmac edge and the organisers had put blocks every 20m-ish indicating that perhaps Lampaert shouldn't have been there either although interestingly where the spectators were stood was on a corner with no blocks.

If the riders are not supposed to use that section of road then the organisers need to make it clearer to them and the spectators where they can actually stand. In this case I don't think the spectator was encroaching massively in the road and was paying attention to the race (not taking a selfie or trying to get on TV) just didn't/couldn't react quickly enough.

Two great races at Roubaix again and the best race weekend of the year. I certainly wouldn't want to race it as a pro as its inevitably brutal regardless of wet or dry.

There was only two riders there. I didn't see any weaving as he was coming to a corner that would be unlikely at that location.

TBH it looked like the spectator thought he had right of way. He was encroaching with his hand and encroaching at all is a no no.

If there's video or visual showing something different fair enough but otherwise I'm not seeing it

It's like the car incident midweek, they should be extra cautious around the riders, not trying to get as close as they can, or squeeze through the smallest gap.

I agree with that 50:50 sort of analysis. How often do we see mountain top finishes (albeit at much slower speeds) crowded with spectators on the road that they are supposed to keep clear; to a degree the riders have to ride their bikes to avoid the spectators in the road. Equally, spectators have a duty not to get in the way.

Lampaert was forced by those barriers to be on the cobbles, but spotted a chance to ride on the smooth tarmac, but as he diverted onto it he should / could / did see that up ahead there was a spectator standing on it so he had every chance to avoid contact. At least the spectator was watching in the direction of the riders, rather than the opi-omi case where the spectator was paying no attention at all.

It was a great race though; I was lucky to flick it on just about 10 minutes before the split that Ineos forced. I don't usually enjoy the one day races quite so much but this one chopped and changed so much with contenders nearly all the way.

The spectator was looking at two riders and didn't move. That's nuts to me. I've watched again and Lampaert didn't actually move far. The spectator seemed to lean in to get closer. The only mitigation is that he might have been blocked by the spectators in front of him (they stepped back a little) otherwise I don't know what he was looking at as they were the only two riders there.

Having watched the video, Lampaert does change direction to jump on to the non-cobbled part and it happens very quickly. The spectator doesn't get much chance to react, but does seem to be moving backwards out of the way. Yes he's too close, and unwise, but Lampaert went too close - probably due to tiredness. Cycling authorities both like spectators close it seems (otherwise the mountain top finishes would be barred much lower down than the last km), and don't want incidents like this.

When the anti-christ Lance Armstrong hooked a bag and fell off on the ascent chasing Ullrich all those years ago, he acknowledged blame as well in the incident.

I suggest any threats of being sued will be quietly dropped, it simply isn't clearcut 100% one way or the other.

The spectators arms don't really move back, he just moves his legs and leans further forward. Makes no sense to me.

Lampaert only went to the curb so I don't think he went too far TBH.

I saw the LR video. Made some good points about the conditions and how it could be confusing. At the end of the day though, even he said he has no idea what the spectator was doing with his arms. It's like he forgot they existed till they got hit.
