There's one round the corner from our house that I call Over Eager Colin. I haven't checked on him yet this year, but he's usually the first to go. I'll see how he's doing this weekend.

There's a row of four or five of the same type, all of which go that gorgeous red, but Colin (on one end) always goes first. They have fab spikey seed pod things (definitely not chestnuts of any kind), too. I should try to work out what they are, really. Love your baby horse chestnut. There are a couple around the mini play park at the end of our road, I guess something like 30 years old as that's when most of the street was built, which are much much bigger, so that must be only 5 or so? (or perhaps the placement of the play park here was determined by the trees rather than vice versa and they're actually much older). I really love it when I start to find proper conkers - we had a mini conker tournament at work two years ago. Perhaps we need another one soon. A neighbour has a sweet chestnut tree that drops quite a lot into our garden. I quite like sweet chestnut puree, but I intensely don't like dealing with the spikey cases and stabbing myself under the thumb nail peeling the chestnuts, but I feel terribly wasteful just throwing them into the green bin. I might start throwing them back over the neighbor's fence.

I think your baby horse chestnut is a baby sweet chestnut Owlie so those chestnuts (once you've got into the spiny case, as Rae says) would be good to eat 😊

Sam and I disagree about which he is, I say the one furthest away from the camera here - which might mean I've given him a complex by calling him 'over eager' as this year that's the least red by far - but Sam reckons he's the one closest to the camera. Either way, some excellent early autumnal work from the squad.
