The Olympics and parkrun are two different things and shouldn't be compared. They are equally great events and I'm glad we have them both.

Fleecy beat me to it, but as far as participation goes, the olympics have indeed done fuck all, but perhaps that is because elite athletics is not meant to do anything for participation, despite Seb Coe's protestations about legacy. In any case they've changed what they meant by legacy now, it seems to mean West Ham get a fee stadium and park!

Up the Irons!

As for the local council in Brizzle, personally I am amazed no other council has done this yet. I what makes running so special compared to a football club being asked to pay for a pitch that has to be maintained? The park has to be maintained does it not. I think it actually shows the disjointed approach to heath that government/councils and policy has more than anything else.

I saw the guy from the council on the box and he also mentioned insurance.

From what I can see the two sides probably deserved each other. There was room for compromise that would have enabled the event to continue as "no fee". Voluntary donations for parking, or path maintenance or some such. There's part of me that thinks the Council had probably set their stall out to get rid of parkrun come what may. Probably some influential bod lived close by and didn't take kindly to having his weekend lie ins disturbed. Absolutely no evidence to back that up.

The insurance thing is catch all bollox. Like stopping kids climbing trees to collect conkers and blaming "EU rulings".

The answer is vote them out, parish councillors only need a few hundred votes, fairly easy to get rid of.

On the insurance issue, parkrun have insurance which covers all parkrunners - but only where they have permission from the landowners.

So if, after 28 May, which seems to be the shutdown date, 200 runners gather in the park at 9am on a Saturday to go for a run together, they are not insured. Before that date, while doing parkrun they are.

However, there is no cost to the council regarding the insurance, it is just their power regarding the 'permission' clause within parkrun's insurance.

I remember thinking a while back that councils must have spent millions on various 'health of the population' initiatives that had a fraction of the lasting impact of their local park run, and being surprised that they haven't started to interfere.

Not even close, every 4 years how many British people take part in the Olympics? There were 660 at my parkrun last Saturday
