Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Most of the races I do are on public rights of way (footpaths, bridleways etc.) I have only actually organised one and I had to get a permit from the Trail running association and send a letter to the local police - they write back and tell you not to do it and I wrote back basically saying thank you for your advice but I am doing it anyway. Marathon would probably require a lot of helpers/checkpoints etc - mine was a 9.5 circular route and we managed it with just two of us and a 'self service' water station

Just heard back from Lincolnshire County Council:

Running event on Public Right of Ways

There is no specific legislation that I am aware of that prohibit this activity explicitly, however as it could be construed that it is not the natural usage of a public right of way landowners should be advised as a courtesy.

Any event should be organised with safety paramount, particularly if there is a likelihood of encountering cyclists and more importantly horses which may become spooked.

If major carriageways are being used or if participant numbers are relatively large then I would also advise informing the police of the event.

Depending on where the race is, you may also need to think about parking. A lot of fell races start from tiny villages in the middle of nowhere, so parking can be an issue. The default solution is generally to find a friendly farmer and donate something so that he donates a field for a day. Again, though, it depends on numbers...

I'm currently struggling with stiles and gates at the moment. Would I want a route utterly bereft of these?

It depends where they are on the race - stiles in the first mile or so often lead to long queues. Later in the race, people are more spread out.

Gates can be a problem. If you have marshals to man them that's ideal. There was a huge furore on the FRA site when a race was nearly cancelled by United Utilities because runners weren't shutting the gate behind them. If you can't get marshals for gates, then see how many you've got and it might be worth getting a sweeper to follow to make sure that all gates are closed at least at the end of the race.

Most of the gates in question are "kissing" type gates so close either way. I would get marshalls onto any other sort of gate anyway.

One of the courses that I'm envisaging starts on a chalet park, where there's parking, then goes along the sea bank. There's no furniture on that part of the course at all. Then it goes along a canal for a bit, where there might be a couple of stiles or kissing gates, then back across the fields to the chalet park. No roads involved at all. That's one idea.

The other's in the Wolds, but that's a more challenging prospect as there will be road crossings and more gates.
