i do follow cycling and i hear what everyone here is saying about how cycling works but the winner raced it and won. He wasnt launched by his team at the end like a catapult he rode hard and gave himself a chance by trying (sucessfully) to be in the right place at the right time....i think he deserves more credit than he is being given. as for the paula - dont get me started - we spent a fortune going to Greece to watch her... |

The Terminator
Paula needs to make her mind up, not be selfish, and give her place up now if she is not going to be able to compete and being able to compete for Paula surely means going out believing she can win?

The whole point of having someone in the break is so you don't have to chase. Australia had a guy in the break (who finished sixth btw) so they aren't going to chase. Germany may have chased but from what I've read GB didn't ask for help so they weren't going to get any. You can ask for help or indicate that you won't do all the work by letting the time gap go up; if any other teams want a sprint finish then they may come to the front at that point. Seems to me GB thought they could do it alone though. They put their eggs in one basket and lost. One day races don't always end up in a bunch sprint (see the classics for example), in fact Island on the bike thread said the Olympic race has NEVER finished in a bunch sprint, so this is the norm.

Paula isn't the Paula of old, so no. Regardless of what happens she's had a great career. |

Little Nemo - slow-but-steady
Can anyone explain why one of the French track cyclists was in the road race? The commentary team were saying that this qualified him for the track, is this how it's supposed to work? It doesn't make much sense to me!

Great time watching Team GB Women Footballers (& Brazil) qualify for Quarter Finals yesterday. Shame stadium was so bloody empty though!

Little Nemo - slow-but-steady
Cheers for that FreshStart! So France sacrificed one of their road team to get an extra sprinter in the velodrome, a bit sneaky! I can't imagine those cyclists with the chunky thighs being able to get up Box Hill
