I once got asked directions to Windsor in Carshalton by an elderly couple. When I gave them the instructions I could see they weren't following at all so I ended up guiding them as far as the M25. I sometimes wonder if they ever made it.

I once asked someone in the outskirts of Rome the way to the centre (I didn't speak Italian but my mum was having a meltdown in the car). He waved his arms in the direction we'd just come from and said '20 kilometres that way'. Quite why my mum was incapable of reading either signs or a map was beyond me, but as a result of not wanting to imitate her extreme stress in these situations I've cultivated an air of unflappability mixed with curiosity about where I've ended up instead of the place I was aiming for. But satnav makes this a lot easier :)

Wriggling Snake
I have been lost in several nerve wracking places.
San Francisco
Cape Town, on foot, just before nightfall, I was very worried then.
Malaga
Addis Abbaba, which was ok.
Bulawayo, quite concerned, but worked out ok.
Hiking, back of beyond, Glen Coe, very wet, very cold, concerned.
Lake District, up behind Cricnkle Crags, I could see 10 yards.....not clever.

Bint, if you see a young woman en route in a small car, please assist her with directions the rest of the way into Bexhill

I have replaced the batteries in the TV remote.

The old ones were flat, so it wasn't working.
