I was telling a former colleague last night about Mr Kitchen, a junior school teacher we had in the early 70’s, who had a beard. He wore tweed jackets and knit ties plus drove a Morris Traveller. Top bloke was Mr Kitchen

"Weird beard" or "weirdo beardo" was a common term for any bearded person when I was growing up from the late 70s, right through the 80s and 90s (the time when beards were rare and only Northerners and other outliers had moustaches. Any beardy was generally assumed to be a right-on teacher, a social worker, a Trot, a vegetarian, and quite probably a combination of one or more of these things.
