Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

This came out of a conversation I had with the OH last night. She wondered why there weren't any high profile multi-day running races similar to the cycling events (Tour de France etc), where the winner has the lowest cumulative time.

I know there are a few (eg Marathon du Sable) but I guess they don't have the same exposure as the cycling. Probably not quite as exciting for spectators!

So, how many other multi-day races are out there that look at cumulative times? MdS is mainly longer runs - are there any that have shorter distances, or a mixture?

I quite fancy the idea (not sure in practice..!).

I was also thinking, with the advent of chip timing, that staggered starts could be used to aim to have everyone finishing roughly together. Just me having some random thoughts on a run..

'Just' the 24 hours PH.. :-)

Mushroom, if you're into ultras, then the XNRG races are really good, and they are here in the UK too.

There is this event tour-saechsische-schweiz.de which is only 53 km total over three days (7.8 km evening / 30km day/ 15 km day). So one for the keen recreational runner rather than the hadcore ultranutters. In the Elbe valley down from Dresden, beautiful area. I'd have liked to do it but decided I wasn't quite fit enough to enjoy it.

(The event in fact has a variety of runs, cycles and walks. If you look at the schedule and think, hey, only two days, the first event is organised separately but still forms part of the series.)

There are some 3 day events with smaller distances. Like a half marathon, 5k road and and trail run, adding up to 26.2 miles.

Liverpool recently had a series of six races over a week, with a rest day in the middle. Think the total distance was around 52 miles.

The Colworth Marathon Challenge was the one I was thinking of colworthstriders.trevolution.org

There was also a Guardian blog about The Tour of Exeter theguardian.com with some suggestions in the comments (scattered amongst some rather uncharitable comments. Some people really think well of themselves...)
