Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I used to have plastic covered mini greenhouses which were alright but as Eynsham Red observes, they are prone to condensation. I also found that in strong winds they were easily blown over despite tethering them and weighting them like sallykate did.

I eventually bought an Elite 2' wide x 6' long lean-to greenhouse twowests.co.uk (not from them but someone else) which has been very good. The price shown is for the basic model - extras such as automatic vent roof window (I would strongly suggest that), toughened safety glass (highly recommended) instead of horticultural glass (shatters) or polycarbonate (discolours and cuts out some light), base, and powder coating will push up the price.

Different sizes, manufacturers and suppliers are available.
Note that it is self-assembly.
If that is suitable for you, have a good look around to find what is best and cheapest for you.

I bought something similar, a brand called Access I think. It's been good but I have it in the wrong place, too much shade.

how do you get the water from the bath to the plants?

I assume used water (bath shower or washing up) is OK for plants but best not to use on veg?

Fragile Do Not Bend
My most successful tomatoes are always the ones grown in pots placed against the west facing wall of my house, they get plenty of extra warmth that radiates back off the bricks. They do even better than the ones in my greenhouse. I do grow some in a sunny outdoor bed but they always grow more slowly than the others.

As regards bath water, I’ve managed to syphon bath water using a hose through the bathroom window. Run water from the outside tap until it starts coming out of the other end in the bath. Take it off the tap and it’ll start coming back out that end along with the bath water. Bath end of hose needs weighing down so it stays under the water.

Pix, yes: if I were to have a bath full of water, I would syphon it into the garden with a hose, the way you'd empty a fuel tank on a car...

Siphoning is more fun if you're bottling beer... ;-)

After a few years of buying replacement mini greenhouses which the Yorkshire weather demolished every year, I invested my long service award (I added a bit of value by buying Amazon vouchers on a workplace benefits site too!) plus a couple of birthday presents (also Amazon vouchers! ) into the biggest powder coated metal framed glass greenhouse it would run to! It was however an absolute bustard to build. It took me 3 days, and I'm pretty good at that sort of thing! They do say don't leave them half glaze (eg overnight!) if there's any chance of strong winds!

The frames and shelves from the mini greenhouses have been repurposed as greenhouse staging!
