Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thing is, things self seed into the mulch and then attach themselves to the membrane, which is also plastic...

Paul has a form of muscular dystrophy and when tending the beds has to crawl around on hands and knees as his mobility and strength is so poor.
He’s fairly reliant upon volunteers including WWOOFers when available to help.
The fabric membrane is his one concession to not being totally organic, which his growing methods are. He’s very conscious that using this is not ideal, but he’s often fairly knackered by mid-afternoon, so every little aid helps.

All quiet on the garden front? Do any of you still have unseasonal blooms?

This is a bacopa, still flowering merrily in a hanging basket by the front door (hopefully you can make that out, they are dainty flowers). Season should be May-Oct. There are also at least a couple of geraniums flowering, plus several others still in leaf; and three begonias producing teeny-tiny flowers. There's not been a really hard, nor prolonged frost, but certainly a few sub-zero occasions.

I'm reckoning that if I have this, Southerners' gardens may still be resplendent :-)

I’ve got a pot of pelargoniums by the door that surprisingly hasn’t succumbed to the frosts and even has a couple of flower buds on. I guess the sheltered spot and occasional warmth from the wall is enough to keep them going.

Also I have a rose with lots of flowers and buds on still - it’s not unusual for the occasional rose bloom to appear this time of year in my garden, but I’ve never seen so many on the one shrub in winter before. The shrub is in dire need of a prune but I can’t possibly do it whilst it’s got all those flowers on!

Other than that the only blooms are on the fuchsias and the reliable winter jasmine. We have had a few hard frosts so far this winter .

I have some cheerful purple pansies in flower but most of them have been sulking since the frosts. The roses I planted a couple of months ago are putting out new shoots and the half price gypsophila are showing signs of underground activity. Otherwise it's all sticks and dirt.

Despite a few (not very hard) frosts, one of my marigolds still has a flower hanging on.

Also several primulae.

And the winter jasmine, but that's to be expected.

The Christmas rose, on the other hand, shows no sign of flowering any time soon.

I have an osteospurmum still in flower (when the sun comes out) and the fancy winter primroses I planted last year are mostly in flower.

I also noticed some bulbs stating to show above the ground, including snowdrops.

I have a large hebe which I should have cut back last year, it has quite a few flowers on it, as do my straggly lavenders (which I also failed to prune). I see quite a few roses when I'm out & about.
