Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

At another client yesterday we have a massive rose bush in full flower! And everywhere I have only bern partially cutting back because lots of things simply haven't gone dormant!

Can anybody suggest failproof / foolproof annuals that are reliable, make lots of flower / nectar, good for insects (so probably not doubles), for what is currently a small lawn? I don't want another wildflower meadow, but natives would be fine. Clay soil, neutral to slightly acid, short growing season, reasonably sunny spot.

Marigolds, jacdaw? - Not French marigolds, but the standard "pot marigolds" as I think they're called.

Nigella? Nasturtiums?

Yeah, I can grow them. Great for hoverflies. I'm thinking stock, too; both sorts. Possibly nasturtiums.

Nasturtiums are loved by cabbage white caterpillars and self seed with gay abandon. Also: you can eat the peppery flowers and leaves in salads. A win in my view!

Nicotiana is good and easy to propagate from seed. Make sure you get the ones that have scent at night to attract night flying pollinators.

And you can pick them for a vase.
I find opium poppies great too. Lovely flowers, always full of bees, followed by fabulous seed heads decorative in winter and loved by birds.
Don't discount sunflowers: you can get smaller ones that branch out with multiple flowers. I call them my bird feeders and leave them up over winter.
