um 🎄
No update to the total but a cut & paste job from today's Times taste test.
The only one I can confirm is the Tesco Finest review. The Tesco std (imho) are far better this year.

Booths All-Butter Mince Pies
booths.co.uk, £2.85 for 6
★★★★★
The filling is moist and really showcases a decent hit of Christmassy spice, with ginger and coriander to the fore.

Morrisons Deep-Filled Mince Pies
morrisons.com, £2 for 6
★★★★★
Another beauty. These are nicely browned and imperfectly perfect. Pastry’s good, the filling’s good. It’s an excellent pie.

Asda Extra Special Luxury Mince Pies

asda.com, £1.75 for 6
★★★★☆
The buttery, shortbready pastry could do with being a bit thinner, but it’s well filled and tasty.

Iceland Luxury All-Butter Mince Pies
iceland.co.uk, £1.89 for 6
★★★★☆
It’s all about snowflake designs this year. The pastry is beautifully crisp and the filling has a nice tartness about it (from yuzu, I later learn).

Marks & Spencer Collection Mince Pies
ocado.com, £2.50 for 6
★★★★☆
Another very decent pie. Nice shortcrust pastry, moist filling peeping out from beneath the star-shaped lid . . . What’s going on?

Morrisons The Best Florentine Mince Pies

Morrisons (in store), £2 for 6
★★★★☆
Plenty of gold and flaked almonds, but these are bright with citrus and
not too sweet. Only let down by a slightly undercooked bottom. I could happily finish one of these.

Waitrose No 1 All-Butter Mince Pies
waitrose.com, £2.50 for 6
★★★☆☆
Hardly No 1, I’m afraid. The pastry is fine, but the sticky, claggy filling is hard-going with only the occasional chunk of nut to relieve the tedium of chewing.

Sainbury’s Taste the Difference Rum, Pineapple and Coconut Mince Pies
sainsburys.co.uk, £2 for 4
★★★☆☆
An unhappy hybrid, like a raisiny treacle tart drizzled with Malibu. It would be lovely with custard, but as a standalone bite I’m not convinced.

Lidl Deluxe Speculoos and Almond Mince Tarts
Lidl (in store only), £2.49 for 6
★★★☆☆
Tarts rather than pies, note. Nice latticework of pastry, which has a good crunch to it, and plenty of flaked almonds. They haven’t overdone the cinnamon and spice either.

Waitrose Butter-Enriched Mince Pies
waitrose.com, £1.90 for 6
★★★☆☆
The pastry’s all right, the filling’s all right, and it’s pie-shaped. If that ticks all your boxes, you tuck right in. Personally, I’ll give it a miss.

Oggs Luxury Handmade Mince Pies

sainsburys.co.uk, £2.50 for 4
★★☆☆☆
These could pass as homemade, but not sure you’d want to claim them. Very plain pastry and the plump-fruited filling is not flavoursome enough to save the day. Oh, I see. Vegan.

Aldi Millionaire Shortbread Mince Pies
aldi.co.uk, £1.99 for 6
★★☆☆☆
I like millionaire’s shortbread. I like mince pies. But together they are too much. The shortbread element is lovely and buttery, but the chocolatey, fudgy filling is overkill and way too sweet.

Morrisons The Best Black Forest Mince Pies
Morrisons (in store), £2 for 6
★★☆☆☆
A loose, gravelly topping dusted with gold and such short pastry it collapses at first bite. Tastes of slightly chocolatey cherry jam. Which I guess is the unorthodox intention.

Tesco Finest All-Butter Pastry Mince Pies with Cognac, Brandy and Port
tesco.com, £1.75 for 6
★☆☆☆☆
Sorry, Tesco, you’re not doing it for me. The all-butter pastry doesn’t taste very buttery, the bottoms are undercooked and the filling is grainy.

Asda Extra Special Luxury Sloe Gin Mince Pies
asda.com, £2 for 6
★☆☆☆☆
If Haribo made a mince pie, this would be it. No artificial flavours, they say, but they’ve sure got me fooled. A bonus point for the pretty pastry stars and dusting of icing sugar.
