Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

larkim that’s where I mean, seen a few come a cropper especially down into llanberis. Just like to feel a little more confident with footing on those surfaces.

Might be worth getting a supporter to have spare shoes ready just before the last climb!! ;-)

Agree though, that final descent is a nightmare of slipperyness. You've got me thinking about it now...

I thought I remembered seeing you run Snowdonia, as it was then, in Inov8s before, UltraDunc, and checked. From my blog about the 2010 race: I think I lost at least 100 places on that climb. Ultra Dunc (in F-Lite 230s) stomped past me, ouching with each step. I wished I'd done the same because I was using 230s for quite a lot of my road running at the time and the underfoot conditions were rotten in places.

Must admit that the Brooks that I run in on roads are pretty terrible for traction on slippery surfaces, though they're OK on gravel etc. I do recall last time I did Eryri being terrified as I descended over the grass in that last bit, but I couldn't imagine the pain of running the whole thing in trail shoes.

The original Inov8 F-Lite 230s (I believe the design has changed) were intended for trail racing but were decent road running shoes. Unaggressive and tarmac-tolerant soles, a little bit of cushioning, 6mm heel-forefoot differential. I still have some but would probably rattle with every step if I tried to use them for running now.

Ah yes, my son got up-sold a pair of those as a young keen XC teenager! At the time I wasn't in touch with shoes, hadn't quite appreciated how iconic they were!

I fell on the final descent in 2011, a few hundred yds before the tarmac begins to reappear. I ‘bounced’ off a rock, landed back on my feet and somehow continued running. A few marshals just by the gate at that point tried to stop me and to check i was ok, but i was having none of it at the time, so close to the finish and on track for a sub-4. It was only when i got to the end i realised why they had been quite so concerned, i was covered in blood (admittedly made worse by sweat and general dampness of conditions) - i got bundled off to the first aid area of the electric mountain centre and a few stitches in my chin from the local GP later was sent on my way…it’s definitely made me more nervous of that section every time since!

Velociraptor Yes I remember that one , had to stop to sort out a toe issue briefly.
The course has changed slightly , after Pen Y Pass and the right turn Pen Y Ceryd 6 miles approx it forks right down a stoney farm track for a mile or so. The stones are loose and can roll over and induce a slide.
So X Talons are my choice, still miss those old f- lites I had quite a few pairs some off El Bee

That stony section caught me by surprised on the one and only time I've done it before. But not sure that different shoes would have made it feel any better in terms of the general trip hazard of flying down at 6min/miling compared to the toil of climbing before that.

I'm sure the stony section was there for the first time in 2010 when the start moved into the town, or at least there was a new bit of rough trail that year. Took me by surprise, but I was a much stronger descender in those days and the mile split containing that track is still my fastest ever recorded mile.

About This Thread

Maintained by UltraDunc
No success in the ballot first time round but there is a second one in February and even then there will be places available.
I think it’s a marketing ploy to drum up support even though it’s a fabulous event as it’s also one that perhaps a lot think it’s just a bit too hard.
