No success in the ballot first time round but there is a second one in February and even then there will be places available. I think it’s a marketing ploy to drum up support even though it’s a fabulous event as it’s also one that perhaps a lot think it’s just a bit too hard.

I got a ballot spot, had forgotten I'd applied.
Well, that's a thing!

I think the second round ballot is for places not bought and paid for off the first round. Last time I had a place I had to get one within about 5 minutes of the launch of the sales, I don't think they had any alternative but to go for a ballot as demand is really high, despite (or maybe because of) the challenges.

There are always loads of places being offered as a transfer nearer the actual event

Yes, they have a decent transfer policy which is good for a ballot race. Though they close the transfer window a bit too early for those (like me a few years ago) if you get injured close to race day. Unless that's changed now, of course.

oooh, glad I noticed this thread as I had completely forgotten results were out today and my 'congratulations' email had gone in my spam folder and could have been lost forever I get why they switched to a ballot, pre-covid it was a total bun fight to get a place when entries opened. Not sure there is still that level of demand now though (for races generally not just this one). Hope you secure a place one way or another UD.

1 out of 2 successful in the ballot here - same as last time, but the other way round. If training goes ok I’ll be looking for a transfer place (I’m assuming I’m unlikely to get one in any 2nd ballot in Feb as at this point I expect most people will take up their spots)

Consider it’s a sold-out ballot and transfers allowed, it’s a mystery to me why only about 80% of the numbers turn up. And even fewer for last year although that’s not surprising.

The cut off for transfers is 30th Sept which is quite early, so I suspect that accounts for some of the DNS entries. I got injured 3.5 weeks before Snowdonia in 2019 so was stuck with an unusable entry that I know I could have passed on, and after emailing the organisers they confirmed it was a hard deadline. Their choice of course and they were very polite and sympathetic so I've no hard feelings, but I'd guess there are quite a few runners who only really know in the last four weeks if they are going to run or not whether it is down to injury, something else cropping up, training deficits, logistical issues etc.

We were two of those 80% in 2022 - the other half suffered a serious medical incident 3 weeks before and I really didn't feel like doing it by myself
He's fine now and we're both in for 2023
