I agree, the first aim should be "be less wasteful", e.g. minimise packaging, minimise single use products, minimise pointless tat. Then the second aim is to use sustainable materials as much as possible.

Elsie too and I, with the help of young B, made soap from conkers this afternoon. We’re waiting for the bars to dry but Elsie has a load of washing in the machine with the Conker soak water.

It's amazing that so many people continue to throw out sugar, salt, pepper, spices due to BBD (Best Before Date). Classic: 250m yo salt expires next year.

Just to jump in and take you back to the first couple of pages: I know aluminium is energy intensive in its production, but so much so that it’s responsible for hydro-electric schemes all over the world. My limited experience prevents an informed opinion, but I had thought it was probably less bad than some other materials. And it’s one of the most plentiful elements on Earth. Composting toilets: we had a lot of experience using these whilst ski-trekking in Norway. Totally brilliant idea and very workable. We're getting one of these fitted into our Scouts' campsite: toiletrevolution.com Not cheap, but they work. |
