I have a few pairs of bulky road shoes for training and was wondering what most people use and how many miles do they have in them on a road marathon. Most of mine are pretty new, but with 7 weeks to go could easily be at the wrong end of the scale.

When I used to have a target marathon in mind, I'd buy a new pair of shoes for the training cycle, and alternating them with old ones I'd try to get 100 miles in them, including at least one of my longest long runs. But that was rather to make sure they weren't too new or likely to give me issues, rather than too old.
I've taken shoes at the latter end of their supposed life to foreign marathons in order to bin them and give me room to bring home presents in my luggage.
So long as they are still comfortable, I'd wear whichever ones I felt best in.

NaomiP qualified for the hundred marathon club wearing a brand new pair of shoes for every one, if I remember rightly. I wouldn't risk that; I bought a pair of shoes I'd used before and one of the heel cups was misshapen and was painful to wear. I do much the same as DeeGee for the same reasons.

I have a pair of trainers I wear only for races (not necessarily every race though) and maybe the odd training run depending on how long I have had since the last use. They currently have 170 miles in them over the last few years. Would look to replace them with another pair just for races at some point.

Mileage in trainers can be vert variable. It depends on how you run, your build and the type of shoe. I can regularly get up to 1000 miles from mine - but again for some shoes I got a lot less (wave riders fell apart a lot sooner).

Badger, surely that can't be true about Naomi can it? She ran 50+ marathons in 2010. Did she really buy a brand new pair of trainers every week???
UTRaB - I'm the same as DG. Somewhere between 50-100miles with at least +2 hour run in them.

Hence me questioning my own memory. I remember her being clear about the new shoes bit of the pre race ritual, but that did sound like a lot of shoes!

My favourite pair has 400 miles in them, so I guess they wont last till end of Apr. Have another road shoe, but not loving model, really hard. So will order a new pair of Glide Boost and get them up to the 100m mark.

I tend to get a pair, wear them in for a few recovery runs, then get one or two sessions (maybe a half as well) and a long run then back in the box with somewhere between 50-100 miles on the shoes.
The pair I have for VLM have 8 miles in them so far and felt really comfortable and I will use them a bit over next 2-3 weeks to ensure they are ready then put aside.

oh, I did once race a half in a pair that had just one recovery run of 6 miles in them with no issue, it was a last minute decision as I decided all my other pairs were too well used and so I did a recovery run in them on the Friday I think and raced in them. Felt braw on the start line with shiny new trainers blinding everyone and pretty sure I PBd that day as well !
