My in-laws (Manchester) also do the cheese and fruit cake thing - wensleydale I believe. Personally, I think it's a bit odd but "Don't knock it 'till you've tried it" may apply.

Fruit cake and cheese is a wonderful combination. I first heard of it in a James Herriot story when I was a kid.
