And do I end up with millions of columns? Or if I buy a widget and a whatnot both on interest free credit can they both go in the same (liabilities?) column?

You wouldn’t end up with millions. Even the University system, which was devised by a pack of feral cats on acid, has less than a thousand.

And I can have multiple nominal accounts ('pots') in one actual account? So my Goldman Sachs account can notionally be comprised of the 'going Spurs' fund, the 'sports kit' fund and the 'just in case' fund? And they are three columns that just happen to be in the same physical account?

Trying to learn double entry from a book is a PITA.
There is a For Dummies book on the subject. You could take a look and then maybe we could Zoom?

Why not spend the many hours you are thinking of wasting on book-keeping by stacking supermarket shelves and thus relieve any desperate need to know where your money is going?

As you know, I have a book I recommend on double-entry bookkeeping, perhaps it is time for a re-read?
