I but a widget today for £10,000. I put in in my home spreadsheet as an entry in the outgoings. Job done.
With me so far? Good.

I just used a basic for spend monitoring when we were skint. I can imagine some fancy software where you could e.g. import your credit card and bank statements and then tag entries with categories, would be helpful, though...

But suppose the salesperson at Widgets-R-Nosotros offers me interest free credit? So the £10,000 can stay in my bank account earning a teeny-tiny bit of interest and I pay it back in £1,000 instalments over the next 10 months.
What do I do with my spreadsheet?
Please be gentle. And no pointing-and-laughing.

I'd be minded to do it on a cashflow basis (i.e. recognise zero expenditure now, and include the instalments as paid off instead).
Not how you'd do it in a company (I'm assuming you're not bothering with a balance sheet, depreciation, etc) but you presumably don't need to get this audited at year-end...

I have more idea what the second sentence means than the first.
I'm sure what you said was very well intentioned, but it made as much sense as VLOOKUP would to my father*

Hahaha, sorry.
Right, I'd:
a) Record nothing for the day of purchase; b) Record the 10 x £1,000 instalments over the next ten months; c) Don't forget the interest income if you're being fussy over everything tying up to the penny
