Cheeky’s Dad
Very sad to see Terri Garr has passed away. Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite films

Not seen much new lately. Old ones: The Manxman (1929 Hitchcock silent with live piano accompaniment). Filmed in Polperro, I watched it down there. Lord of the flies (1963 version) as part of William Golding outreach at the uni. Quite good very expressionist direction by a famous theatre director whose name escapes me. Der Golem (1920 silent). Also with live musical accompaniment - viola this time. Sets and acting were pretty impressive for a film so old. The film looked in surprisingly good condition too. New ones: The Room Next Door - new Amodolvar (can’t spell his name!). Am a bit bored with films about rich white people. Enjoyed the colour palette and the Edward Hopper references - there was an early scene and the house in it looked like his house by the railroad painting. And some interesting thoughts about the process of death and dying. Anora. A New York sex worker marries a frankly awful Russian oligarchs son, and the family intervene to get the marriage annulled. Very intense and perhaps a bit like being in a boxing match whilst high on several psychoactive substances with a fire alarm going off. A bit like that Safdie brothers film - Uncut Gems with the nonstop shouting. I would see it again but need to recover from the rollercoaster of trauma. Very good and incredibly funny. |

I’ll probably see Anora this weekend. The other ones I fancy - Heretic, or Small Things Like These- are likely to be around for longer.

Lee Not sure what to say. Seems wrong to say I enjoyed it but it's an excellent film. |

First two days of film festival - all old films for clarity The Big Heat Point Blank To Have and Have Not Human Desire Out of The Past The Night and the city Víctimas del Pecado (Victims of Sin) Body Heat Víctimas del Pecado is a Mexican noir in the Rumberas style, which are women led stories featuring club dancers (rumba I guess?) and prostitution as the heroines, encounter gangsters and pimps with musical and dancing interludes. So quite subversive compared to the production code of the US I think. Apparently cult status due to their crossing of genres. I really enjoyed this - dramatic, funny, and one particularly raunchy and very funny song. There are four of these films on show and I may see another one today. So far a 50:50 mix between stuff I’ve seen before (though not on a big screen) and new films - for me anyway |

Kate Winslet is excellent in Lee. It’s a great film. A tough watch in places but really worth it.
