That line from the trailer, worth seeing the film to put in context I suppose. The scenes of her - and other characters - drinking were difficult to watch at times.

Also some people may be watching it in the cinema with a drink by their side which is an interesting juxtaposition.

Sweetie wrote:*delurks* I'm just back from megalopolis - I *think* I liked it but there was so much crammed in there I still haven't processed it all. The first 1/2 hour felt like a jumbled car crash but maybe it got better or I just got into it, I don't know. There was one really bizarre bit and I want to know, when others see it, if that is in all screenings or just because this one was at a film festival... At one point one of the characters is being interviewed by a reporter and it drops from the big screen to a small screen with an actor live on stage, as though they are the reporter, and then the character in the film is answering the questions, they can't be doing that in all screenings, right?! Film students will be dissecting this one for years to come, my brain hurts.

I can confirm the bit mentioned here features.

Well I am back. I watched it on an imax. Rare for me to see something on imax as none that locally and I generally don’t like the sort of films they put on IMAX screens. I don’t think I liked this much either. There were 10 people there on a Friday night. I doubt it will be in cinemas next week.

It is a spectacle with some stunning set piece scenes but I found it quite empty. The film simultaneously drags along and feels rushed. We meet characters but it really isn’t clear who is who and what is what and there seemed to be huge jumps in the plot where presumably entire scenes were cut. I imagine Coppola has a preferred directors cut which is much longer. Would have been better as a miniseries to allow for the world building.

The very last scene felt like something from return of the Jedi. For all the criticism Coppola’s era of directors have of superhero films this felt like a subpar version of them.

Sorry; I misread it - there was no actor on stage live, but it seems it has been done for loads of film festivals according to the Wikipedia article

Interesting Fields, I get your description of the film as 'empty', despite there being so much crammed in there, as I found no connection with the characters at all. I've blogged a slightly fuller review, it undoubtedly has its flaws but I think it is still worth a watch, just to appreciate the ambition of it, if nothing else!

Yes it is so filled with detail I wanted to spend much more time understanding what the hell was going on, hence thinking it should have been a series. But ultimately empty as I never felt I knew the characters.

Some of the gender stereotyping eg Wow Platinum making the joke about oral was crude and I guess the sort of thing an 80 year old man would probably think fine to put in the script but it felt like it belonged in a pornography film. I cringed.

Certainly it is ambitious but it does not succeed

saw the outrun earlier this afternoon - subject matter does hit hard but i think it avoids stepping into obvious cliche for the most part. scenery is stunning.

I have revisited Never Let Me Go as it was £1 film this week at picturehouse

It remains a devastating film. Not just me having a little cry at the end I think.

It's a bit weird that Never Let Go (sci-fi horror) is also released this week. Both films listed in the local Picturehouse. I hope they are confirming with punters exactly which film they are going to see.

I've not see NLMG by the way but I loved the book. Ishiguro always does 'devastating' very well.

Yes that’s an interesting piece of symmetry but doubt I’ll be watching the Halle Berry film.

I’ve never forgotten the look on Anthony Hopkins’s face on the pier near the end of The Remains of The Day, his soul just disappears
