Hope these spoiler tags work re Civil War:

Reviews I'd read claimed the film made no distinction about the 'good' or 'bad' side of the war. Not sure I agree. I picked up definite hints that the WF were rising against a despot - he was said to be in his third term, suggesting the 22nd Amendment had been overturned - and his behaviour seemed distinctly 'Trumpian'.

Err…oops. That wasn’t intentional. Sorry. At least it’s not a story that hinges on a hidden twist. I’ll try to be more careful in future 😳

@Diogenes Cheers, but cheapest tickets £52.50! Yikes. That's a lot for a lunchtime show!

We go to a Mark Kermode live show at the BFI once a month. My membership gets me in for £16. I suspect the December show at the BFI will be the day after this.

I went to see The Critic.... and this is what I thought...
The film is set in the 1930’s and the costume and set design beautifully evoke that time. Ian McKellen plays Jimmy Erskine, an aging, gay theatre critic for the (fictitious)Daily Chronicle. This is a thinly veiled reference to the Daily Express, as during the film the Daily Mail is refereed to as “the competition” and the owner/proprietor is called Lord Brooke ( played by Mark Strong) in reference to Lord Beaverbrooke, founder of the Express.
Erskine’s job is under threat as the owner/proprietor doesn’t like that he is gay and also that his writing style is too scathing. Erskine’s strongest vitriol is reserved for actress Nina Land (Gemma Atherton). Brooke takes his chance to dismiss Erskine when Erskine is arrested after being found is a gay embrace, in public.
Erskine hatches a plot to get his job back. He knows Brooke is infatuated with Land, he will persuade her to seduce him, then blackmail Brooke over his infidelity. He will then reward her with favourable reviews, promoting her career. She agrees. Brooke gives Erskine his job back but commits suicide rather than be disgraced.
After, Land comes to Erskine’s house, drunk but full of remorse. She threatens to reveal the plot to the Police . Erskine drowns her in the bath. Erskine’s lover and Secretary Tom Turner ( Alfred Enoch) returns to the house and Erskine persuades him to help him dispose of the body which they do by dumping it on a beach. After, Turner leaves Erskine.
Some time later, Turner comes to visit the new proprietor of The Chronicle (Brooke’s daughter), and confesses. He gives evidence against Erskine, who goes to the gallows for murder.
I really enjoyed the film, it’s entertaining all the way through, with McKellen and Atherton especially so. But it changes – more or less at the point of the suicide of Brooke, from being a good black comedy to being a moderate “whodunnit” . There were also a few plot points I was not convinced by. Firstly, could Erskine – a flabby, elderly man, overpower Land, a young woman (albeit drunk), who was fighting for her life and drown her in the bath ? Secondly, if a body was found on a beach in the 1930’s,a victim of an apparent drowning, would the Police just accept that at face value and not carry out any sort of post-mortem, which would reveal that the water in her lungs was fresh water and not salt water and, thirdly, without a post mortem showing that she was murdered, when Turner confessed and incriminated Erskine, could Erskine’s barrister not deny the evidence and label it only as the spiteful lies of a jilted lover ?

Son of a Pronator Man
I saw a really lovely film yesterday. It was called Chinas - a second generation story, a film in Spanish and Chinese with English subtitles shown as part of the Edinburgh Spanish Film festival.

It tells the story of two young (9/10 years) girls of Chinese origin, living in Madrid. The girls are classmates at the same primary school. One girl, Xiang, is the adopted daughter of a middle-class Spanish couple, who is rejecting her cultural identity, not helped by her adoptive parents rather clumsy attempts to connect her with her heritage. The other girl, Lucia, is the daughter of an immigrant family and her parents work long hours in their convenience store, try to maintain close links with family in China and maintain a traditional family lifestyle, integrating only as little as possible. The young actors who play the 3 main parts were excellent and a scene in which Lucia and one of her Spanish school friends try to change the shape of their eyelids with sticking -plasters to be more like each other, is very touching.
